Materials

The Group’s commitment to sustainability begins with the study of materials to obtain a product of equal quality with a lesser environmental impact.

This is why, starting 2020, we have decided to give our items sustainability parameters. An item produced by Oniverse can be defined as sustainable when it meets criteria of traceability, ethics and composition. Our commitment is mainly directed towards three areas: responsible, transparent supply chain management, use of materials with a lesser environmental impact and a more aware use of packing and packaging.

Oniverse is constantly committed to the research and development of new items of clothing. The study and use of products with a lower environmental impact is an essential part of this process, with such items needing to account for at least 25% of the fabrics used by the Group by end 2025.

As proof of the importance of this objective, in 2023 we reached 23% and, in particular:

Raw materials

The raw materials mainly used by Oniverse are fabrics, yarns and lace, as well as different types of accessories (e.g. hooks, laces, straps, elastic bands, etc.). To date, the percentage of natural fibres used to manufacture the items stands at 41% for yarns, 39% for raw fabrics, and 32% for finished materials.

By nature, the packaging is a disposable material, making it one of the first elements to be taken into account when talking about environmental impact. On the other hand, packaging makes it possible to safeguard the quality of the items and optimising it in the eyes of our customers. The Group’s challenge is precisely this: to keep the protection and practicality offered by packaging unchanged and, at the same time, to reduce its quantity and use materials that have a simpler end-of-life management.

According to the objectives established by the Fashion Pact, by 2025 we are committed to eliminate single-use plastic in B2C and B2B packaging by 2030. Furthermore, by 2025 the packaging used in B2C and B2B will contain at least 50% recycled plastic, which will become 100% in 2030. The Group has made huge efforts to implement strategies to eliminate superfluous packaging, to replace synthetic materials with renewable/biodegradable ones and to use recycled materials. The total elimination of shrink film in Ducal, Castagnaro and Gissi warehouses has made for savings of 34,735 kg of plastic and improvements and innovations applied to the packaging of some products have avoided a further 7,500 kg. In all, therefore, the Group has managed to avoid 41,740 kg plastic. Last but by no means least, the Group has replaced around 521,000 kg virgin plastic with recycled plastic.

We have reached numerous milestones: 34,735 kg plastic shrink film eliminated, 1,900 kg plastic avoided thanks to packaging changes for certain products and the packaging layout, 5,105 kg plastic avoided thanks to the replacement of plastic polybags with paper strips and, last but by no means least, 521,000 kg virgin plastic replaced by virgin.

As part of the process for the design and development of the furnishing formats, the Group, for preference, opts for furnishing accessories that minimise the environmental impact. More specifically, during the design phase, Oniverse considers the entire life cycle of the various accessories - from manufacture to the useful life cycle and disposal - seeking to foster virtuous behaviour. Moreover, the Group pays increasing attention to looking for materials that can be sourced near its stores, thereby supporting the local community and also minimising the environmental impact connected with the transport of the components used.
