RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT OF MANUFACTURING PROCESSES AND SUPPLIERS

Risk assessment

Production processes and the assessment of related risks

The prevention and assessment of risk are essential in production processes in order to guarantee workers' health and safety, environmental protection and the protection of our production activities.

Risk prevention in production implies an assessment of the relevant magnitude, the probability of their occurrence and the implementation of measures aiming to limit such risk.

To this end, a crossover assessment is needed, which takes into account all the various phases of the process (Commercialised, CMT, Wet Process, Mills and Raw Material) and assesses the specific risks so as to be able to perform in situ targeted assessments through our audits.

Considering the close correlation between the development of a country and the social and environmental risks, in order to guarantee a specific assessment of an individual supplier, we use certain indicators like the Human Development Index (HDI), which can provide a general overview of the level of social-economic development of the country in question and the living conditions of its citizens.

Environmental risks:

1. Water pollution: Water pollution risks due to the dyeing and finishing processes, use of considerable quantities of water, release of waste water without suitable treatments.

2.  Air pollution: Emission of air pollutant substances, like fine powders and exhaust gas emissions of the thermal plants.

3.  Soil pollution: The use of chemical products can contaminate the soil and compromise the health of the people living there and the biodiversity of the place.

4.  Waste production: Production of a large quantity of waste, production waste, unused fabrics, chemical products and packaging.

Social risks:

1. Exploitation of work: Use of low-cost labour and exploitation of workers, breach of rights and salaries inadequate to the cost of living.

2. Dangerous working conditions: Use of toxic chemical products and working with dangerous machinery.

3. Impact on the local community: Destruction of the natural habitat and loss of agricultural lands.

4. Sub-supply: Lack of a direct control over the practices and policies of chain components.
